An American Masterwork: Thomas Hart Benton’s “Sources of Country Music” at 50 explores Benton’s process in creating his final painting, which was commissioned by the Museum in 1973. The exhibit includes sketches, drawings, lithographs, photographs, and a three-dimensional model of the painting, along with a 1975 video of Benton speaking about the mural.

During this program, award-winning art historian, curator, and Benton biographer Henry Adams; curator of American Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art Katelyn Crawford; and the Museum senior registrar, Elek Horvath, will provide insightful interpretation of the painting; background on Benton, his technique, and his enduring importance; and the story of the commissioning of the mural for the Museum. Seth Feman, executive director and CEO of Nashville’s Frist Art Museum, will moderate this program.
