The Museum’s Alan Stoker and his brother, Brent, will discuss Alan’s book, The Jordanaires: The Story of the World’s Greatest Backup Vocal Group as Told by Gordon Stoker, which he co-authored with Michael Kosser. The Stokers’ father, Gordon Stoker, was a longtime member of the Grammy-winning group, who were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Originally formed in the late 1940s as a gospel group, the Jordanaires became Nashville’s premier backing vocal quartet and a leading contributor to the “Nashville Sound,” which helped broaden country music’s appeal. During their heyday of the 1950s through the 1970s, the Jordanaires provided background vocals on thousands of recordings, including those by Patsy Cline, Johnny Horton, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Kenny Rogers, Tammy Wynette, and, most notably, Elvis Presley. During this program, the Stoker brothers will discuss their father’s recollections of the Jordanaires and the quartet’s storied career in American popular music. The Museum’s Patrick Huber will moderate. After the program, Alan Stoker will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase. Taylor Swift Education Center. Included with Museum admission. Free to Museum members.
