Steve Fishell will discuss his 2022 book Buddy Emmons: Steel Guitar Icon, which draws on in-depth interviews and autobiographical writings from the pedal steel guitar legend, whose technique set standards by which many steel players measure themselves today. Emmons’s pioneering contributions as both a player and an inventor have earned him the enduring respect and admiration of his peers. First discovered at age eighteen by Little Jimmy Dickens, Emmons’s musicianship can be heard on recordings by Dickens, Ray Charles, Duane Eddy, Vince Gill, John Hartford, Gram Parsons, Ray Price, Linda Ronstadt, George Strait, Ernest Tubb, and Faron Young. A pedal steel guitarist himself, Fishell has recorded and performed with Emmylou Harris for forty years and has also recorded with Eric Church, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton. Additionally, he has produced #1 singles for Radney Foster and Pam Tillis, and he produced the 2013 tribute album The Big E: Salute to Buddy Emmons. The Museum’s Dave Paulson will moderate. After the program, Fishell will be available to sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase. Taylor Swift Education Center. Included with Museum admission. Free to Museum members.
