Words & Music FAQ

What is in the Resource Portal and how do I use the material?

The Resource Portal contains tools for you to use in the classroom to enhance the learning experience for your students. Some material is customizable so you can adjust according to your classroom goals and needs. The resources (PowerPoints, videos, etc.) are designed for use while teaching the ten-lesson Words & Music unit.

How do the PowerPoints work?

Each PowerPoint is designed to coordinate with a specific lesson. The slides feature activity prompts, videos, and homework details. The PowerPoints are downloadable and customizable so you can adjust to meet your specific needs.

How do I use the videos?

Videos in grade specific sections correspond to songs featured in the Words & Music lessons.  Topical videos provide a deeper look at the subject of each lesson. Video links can also be found in each lesson’s section of Grades 3-6 and Grades 7-12. Additionally, all videos are listed here.

How do I address material that is not included in the Words & Music Teacher’s Guide?

Extension Lessons can be used throughout the curriculum as additional learning experiences for the students. Each Extension Lesson indicates when during the curriculum it should be used.

What are the Songwriter Biographies?

Songwriter biographies are meant to give deeper contextual information for you and your students. They feature songwriters mentioned in the curriculum as well as additional songwriters considered important contributors to the craft. The songwriter biographies are written to grade level specifications for both 3-6 grades and 7-12 grades. They correspond specifically with the Songwriter Extension Lesson but can be used for other Project Based Learning work or assignments throughout the Words & Music curriculum or outside of the unit all together.

What is Teacher Talk?

Teacher Talk is a space for teachers to share their experiences in teaching the Words & Music curriculum. Use this discussion board to share your ideas for teaching specific lessons, alternate song choices, additional activities, and other tools to use in the classroom.
